We all have that one person we know that finds simple pleasure in winding up people, provoking and more, Diego Simeone is that person. Born in the month of April 1970, amongst the chaos of the suburbs in Buenos Aires. Simeone grew up a city boy ready to face anything that came his way. The culture and the way of Buenos Aires is such that it makes for a perfect breeding ground of people with a lot of character, mavericks in a way. Simeone is a prime example.
Football being an integral part of Argentina shaped Diego’s love for football. He started playing from a very young age in the busy streets of Buenos Aires. He recalls disrupting traffic and being a nuance to his neighbors'. Maybe winding up people just comes naturally to him.
He is famously known for his managerial career but his playing career is nothing short of marvelous. He played for multiple European clubs in Inter-Milan, Lazio and Athletico Madrid. He won numerous numerous club titles along the way before finally retiring with his boyhood club reading in Argentina. Not to forget the two Copa-America titles he won playing for his national team. He made 100+ appearances for his country before finally hanging up his boots in 2007.
El cholo, Diego’s nickname, is also a very funny and interesting one. Because many assume cholo is a Spanish word. But in reality, there is no word as such in the Spanish vocabulary. It’s interesting and weird at the same time because every Athleti home game, ‘’ ole, ole, ole cholo Simeone‘’ echoes the Metropolitano with none of the 60000 fans knowing what it means. It definitely adds more to the character that is Diego Simeone.
Throughout his career, he has been labelled as the master of the dark arts. Maybe a master of the dark arts is what we all need to be, to become one of the highest paid managers of all time. You certainly have to be what people call different to knock both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona off their pedestal and beat them in their own backyards to lift the La-liga title.. Simeone with his so called dark arts has successfully taken Athleti to greater heights without a shadow of doubt, winning two La-ligas, two UEFA Europa leagues, two super cups, a Copa del rey and making to the ucl final twice. Not being able to lift the UCL trophy after making to the final twice in 3 seasons must still haunt him to this day.
But El cholo keeps on giving and we are all here to stay. He is definitely a character and every one on the Roji-Blanco side of Madrid loves and adores him. El cholo is a rare one in the modern Game.
